Great Falls of Passaic River at Patterson NJPassaic County, which covers a total of 197 square miles, has very diverse geography.  The southeastern, more populous half of the county, is either flat near the river or mildly hilly. The northwestern section is rugged and mountainous.

Passaic County is considered as part of the New York City Metro Area, and as of the estimated Census of 2014 the population was approximately 509,000 people, making it the 9th most populous county in New Jersey.
