The History of the Harvest Moon

Harvest Moon The September full moon appears on Sunday, September 27, 2015, at 10:50 p.m. It is called the “Full Harvest Moon.” According to “The Farmer’s Almanac,” this full moon occurs closest to the autumn equinox. The Harvest Moon usually comes in September, but in some years it occurs in October. At the peak of harvest, farmers can work late into the night by the light of this moon. Corn, pumpkins, squash, beans and wild rice, the chief Indian staples, are now ready for gathering. It was also called the “Full Corn Moon” or “Full Barley Moon.” The Native American Indians of the northern and eastern United States kept track of the seasons by giving a name to each recurring full moon. European settlers followed the custom. The Gazette
