The Puerto Rican festival Heritage Festival Has been a tradition in Jersey City NJ since 1961.
A different type of red, white and blue flag will proudly gleam with its island colors when the 54th annual Jersey City Puerto Rican Heritage Festival and Parade takes over Jersey City.
The festivities will begin early on Aug. 15 with a gala at Casino in the Park in Lincoln Park in Jersey City at 7 p.m. On the following day, Aug. 16 at 1 p.m., a festival will be held at Exchange Place at J. Owen Grundy Park including multi-cultural food and children's activities.
"We would like to invite people of all ethnic (groups) to explore and educate themselves on Puerto Rican culture and its contributions to New Jersey, Jersey City and the country," said Luis Lebron, president of the committee that organizes event.
Festival-goers will meet on Aug. 17 at 1 p.m. for a parade, led by this year's grand marshal, Freeholder E. Junior Maldonado, that will run from Lincoln Park to City Hall on Grove Street followed by the final day of the festival at Exchange Place from 2 to 9 p.m.
